Complete Island Tour by Scooter

A Complete Loop Around Ischia by Scooter

Ischia is an island that reveals itself best when explored on two wheels. With a circumference of just 34 kilometres, the main coastal road connects all six municipalities in a continuous loop of breathtaking scenery, hidden coves, and charming villages. Renting a scooter is the ideal way to experience everything at your own pace, stopping whenever a view catches your eye.

Departure from Ischia Porto

Your journey begins right at Ischia Porto, where you can pick up your rental scooter just steps from the ferry dock. The harbour area is lively with cafés and shops, perfect for a quick espresso before hitting the road. Head west along the coastal road, and within minutes the urban bustle gives way to panoramic sea views.

Casamicciola Terme: A Thermal Heritage

The first municipality you encounter is Casamicciola Terme, famous for its thermal springs since Roman times. While you can stop for a quick dip at one of the public thermal parks, the real highlight from the saddle of a scooter is the winding road that climbs slightly above the coast, offering views of the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea. The town’s pastel-coloured buildings cascade down the hillside in a picture-perfect scene.

Lacco Ameno and Il Fungo

Continuing west, you arrive in Lacco Ameno, the smallest municipality on the island. Park your scooter near the waterfront and walk to see Il Fungo — the iconic mushroom-shaped rock that juts out of the sea. This natural sculpture has become one of Ischia’s most photographed landmarks. The nearby Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae in Villa Arbusto is worth a visit if you want to delve into the island’s ancient Greek heritage.

Forio: Sunsets and Sacred Beauty

Forio is the largest municipality and a cultural hub. The white-domed Chiesa del Soccorso, perched on a cliff above the sea, is arguably the most beautiful church on the island. Time your visit for late afternoon and you’ll understand why Forio is considered Ischia’s sunset capital. The Poseidon Thermal Gardens, one of Italy’s most famous spa complexes, is also located here. A scooter lets you easily navigate Forio’s narrow streets and reach the Citara beach area for a refreshing swim.

The Wild South Coast: Sant’Angelo

As you round the southwestern tip, the landscape becomes wilder and more dramatic. The road winds through vineyards and Mediterranean scrub before descending towards Sant’Angelo, a pedestrian-only fishing village that clings to a rocky promontory. Park your scooter in the designated area above the village and walk down the narrow lanes to the harbour. From here, water taxis shuttle visitors to the secluded Maronti beach and the natural hot springs of Cavascura.

Barano d’Ischia and the Maronti Beach

Heading east from Sant’Angelo, you climb through Barano d’Ischia, the island’s agricultural heartland. The hillside terraces are dotted with vineyards producing the local Biancolella and Piedirosso wines. A short detour down a steep road brings you to Spiaggia dei Maronti, the longest beach on the island at nearly 3 kilometres. The volcanic sand is naturally warm in places — dig a shallow hole and feel the geothermal heat beneath your feet.

Return to Ischia Ponte and Castello Aragonese

The final stretch takes you back towards the eastern coast and Ischia Ponte, where the magnificent Castello Aragonese rises from a rocky islet connected to the main island by a stone bridge. This medieval fortress is one of southern Italy’s most impressive historical monuments. Climb to the top for 360-degree views that encompass the entire island, the Bay of Naples, and on clear days, the Amalfi Coast. From Ischia Ponte, it’s just a few minutes’ ride back to Ischia Porto, completing the loop.

Practical Tips for Your Scooter Tour

The full circuit can be completed in about three hours of riding, but we recommend dedicating at least half a day to allow for stops. Start early in the morning to avoid midday heat and traffic. Always wear your helmet — it’s included free with every rental from our fleet. Carry a small backpack with water, sunscreen, and a swimsuit so you can stop for a spontaneous dip at any of the beaches along the way. Fuel stations are located in Ischia Porto, Forio, and Barano, so you’ll never be far from a fill-up.
