The Southern Coast: Ischia’s Most Scenic Drive
The road from Ischia Porto to Sant’Angelo along the southern coast is widely considered the most beautiful drive on the island. Stretching roughly 18 kilometres, this route winds through terraced vineyards, past volcanic fumaroles, and along cliff edges that drop dramatically into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Whether by scooter or car, this itinerary is a must for anyone visiting Ischia.
Setting Off from Ischia Porto
Begin your journey at the bustling harbour of Ischia Porto. After collecting your rental vehicle, head south through the town centre and follow signs towards Barano. As you leave the urban area, the road begins to climb gently through residential neighbourhoods before opening up to reveal the first sweeping views of the coast. The contrast between the lush green hillsides and the deep blue sea is immediately striking.
Through Barano: The Wine Country
The road passes through Barano d’Ischia, the agricultural heart of the island. Here, the hillsides are covered with vineyards growing Biancolella and Piedirosso grapes — the signature varieties of Ischia’s wine tradition. Stop at one of the small family-run wineries along the road for a quick tasting. The local white wine, crisp and mineral, is the perfect companion for a warm day of exploration. From certain viewpoints along this stretch, you can see the entire sweep of the Maronti coastline below.
Descent to Maronti Beach
A well-marked detour leads down a steep, winding road to Spiaggia dei Maronti, the island’s longest beach. Even if you don’t plan to swim, the drive down is spectacular. The beach stretches for nearly three kilometres along the base of dramatic cliffs. If you have time, walk east along the shore to reach the natural thermal springs of Cavascura, where hot water flows down a narrow gorge — a spa experience created by nature itself. Return to the main road and continue west.
Serrara Fontana: The Mountain Village
Climbing higher, you pass through the municipality of Serrara Fontana, perched at the highest point of the southern road. This quiet mountain village offers some of the most dramatic panoramic views on the island. On clear days, the islands of Capri and Procida are visible, along with the distant outline of the Amalfi Coast. The air is noticeably cooler here, scented with pine and wild herbs. Several small restaurants in the village serve traditional dishes like rabbit alla ischitana — a local speciality not to be missed.
Arrival in Sant’Angelo
The road descends steeply towards Sant’Angelo, one of Ischia’s most enchanting villages. Cars and scooters must be parked in the lot above the village, as the narrow lanes are pedestrian-only. Walk down the stone steps to discover a cluster of pastel-coloured houses, boutique shops, and waterfront restaurants. The village sits on a narrow isthmus connecting the main island to a dramatic rocky promontory. In the evening, the setting sun paints the entire scene in gold and amber — one of the most unforgettable sunsets in the Mediterranean.
Hidden Bays Along the Way
Between Maronti and Sant’Angelo, several small bays are accessible only on foot from the coastal path or by water taxi. Cava Grado and Cava Scura are two worth seeking out if you have extra time. A scooter allows you to park at the trailheads and hike down in minutes, while a car gives you the comfort to carry snorkelling gear, a picnic, and beach supplies. Either way, the flexibility of your own vehicle makes these hidden spots accessible in a way that public transport simply cannot.
The Return Journey
For the return trip, you have two excellent options. Retrace your route along the southern coast to enjoy the views from the opposite direction — the light falls differently in the afternoon and reveals new details. Alternatively, continue west from Sant’Angelo towards Forio and return via the western coast road, making a complete half-circuit of the island. Either way, you’ll arrive back in Ischia Porto with a camera full of memories and a deep appreciation for the wild beauty of Ischia’s southern shore.
