Golden Hour on the Island
Few places in the Mediterranean rival Ischia for the beauty of its sunsets. The island’s western exposure, volcanic topography, and clear maritime air combine to create evening light shows that range from soft pastels to blazing oranges and deep purples. Whether you’re on a scooter or in a car, these seven locations offer the most spectacular sunset viewing on the island — each with its own character and atmosphere.
1. Chiesa del Soccorso, Forio
This is Ischia’s most famous sunset spot, and it fully deserves its reputation. The white church of Santa Maria del Soccorso sits on a promontory above the sea in Forio, facing directly west. As the sun descends toward the horizon, the white walls glow pink and gold, and the majolica tiles along the approach path shimmer in the warm light. Arrive early to claim a spot on the church terrace — in summer, locals and visitors alike gather here nightly for the show. The sun dips directly into the Tyrrhenian Sea, and on especially clear evenings, the sky erupts in colour for 20 minutes after it disappears.
2. Sorgeto Bay
Watching the sunset while soaking in natural hot springs is an experience unique to Ischia. Sorgeto Bay faces southwest, and the combination of warm volcanic water, steam rising from the rocks, and a sky painted in amber creates an almost surreal atmosphere. Ride your scooter to the parking area above the bay and descend the steps. The experience is even better in the cooler months when the steam is thicker and more atmospheric.
3. Sant’Angelo Harbour
The tiny harbour of Sant’Angelo offers a sunset backdrop straight from a film set. Colourful fishing boats bob in the water, the pastel houses climb the hillside behind, and the massive rock promontory frames the scene. Park above the village and walk down to the waterfront. Choose a table at one of the harbour restaurants and watch the transformation of light over a glass of local Biancolella wine.
4. Belvedere di Serrara
For an elevated perspective, the viewpoint above Serrara offers a panoramic sunset that encompasses the entire southern coast. From this height, you can see the sun’s reflection stretching across the sea in a golden path. The drive or ride up to Serrara is scenic in itself, and the relative remoteness means you’ll share the view with few others.
5. Giardini Poseidon, Citara Beach
Even if you’re not visiting the Poseidon thermal park, the stretch of Citara Beach in front of the gardens faces directly west and offers a wide, open horizon for sunset viewing. The beach is easily accessible by scooter or car, with parking nearby. Spread a towel on the sand and watch the day end in spectacular fashion.
6. Punta Caruso
The wild northwestern tip of the island is Ischia’s most remote and dramatic sunset location. With no buildings, no lights, and no crowds, it’s just you, the volcanic rocks, and the infinite sea. The sun sets over open water here, and the silence is broken only by waves. Ride your scooter through the Zaro area to the end of the track and walk to the rocks. This is the sunset spot for those who want solitude and raw natural beauty.
7. Monte Epomeo Summit
If you’re willing to combine a late afternoon hike with sunset viewing, the summit of Mount Epomeo at 789 metres offers the ultimate vantage point. The 360-degree panorama means you can watch the shadow of the mountain stretch eastward across the island while the western sky blazes. Ride your scooter to Fontana and hike up in time for the show. Bring a headlamp for the descent in the dark — the trail is well-defined but unlit.
Tips for the Perfect Ischia Sunset
The best sunsets typically occur from May through October, when the angle of the sun and atmospheric conditions create the most vivid colours. Check the sunset time before heading out and arrive at your chosen spot at least 30 minutes early. Bring a light jacket — temperatures drop quickly once the sun disappears, especially at elevated locations. A scooter gives you maximum flexibility to reach these spots, while a car provides comfort for couples or families. Whatever your vehicle, don’t forget to look behind you too — the eastern sky often turns beautiful shades of pink and purple as the sun sets in the west.
