Explore Ischia’s Underwater World
Ischia’s volcanic origins have created an underwater landscape unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Submarine thermal vents, lava rock formations, and nutrient-rich waters support an extraordinary diversity of marine life. Snorkelling here is accessible to everyone — the best spots are close to shore and reachable by scooter or car. All you need is a mask, snorkel, and fins to discover a hidden world beneath the surface.
Cartaromana: Underwater Thermal Vents
The waters around Cartaromana, near Ischia Ponte, offer the island’s most unique snorkelling experience. Volcanic vents on the seabed release streams of warm bubbles that rise through crystal-clear water — swimming through them feels like being in a natural jacuzzi. The mix of warm and cool water creates a fascinating thermal layering effect. The rocky bottom is covered with seagrass meadows and colourful sponges, and schools of bream and wrasse are abundant. Ride your scooter to Via Cartaromana and enter the water from the beach.
Punta Caruso: Deep Blue Clarity
The remote northwestern tip of the island offers some of the clearest water in Ischia. The volcanic rock drops steeply into deep blue water, creating dramatic underwater cliffs teeming with life. You’ll see octopus hiding in crevices, moray eels peeking from holes, and large schools of damselfish. The exposed position means the water can be cooler and more dynamic here — best on calm days. Access by scooter through Zaro.
Scogli di Sant’Anna: The Rock Garden
Just off Ischia Ponte, the Scogli di Sant’Anna are a group of rocks that create a sheltered swimming area with excellent snorkelling. The underwater landscape is a jumble of volcanic boulders covered in sea fans and anemones, with countless hiding places for marine life. Nudibranchs, starfish, and sea urchins are easily spotted. The proximity to the Castello Aragonese means you’re snorkelling in the shadow of medieval history — a surreal combination.
Baia di San Montano
The sheltered bay of San Montano in Lacco Ameno has calm, shallow water that’s perfect for beginners and families. The sandy bottom transitions to rocky areas at the edges of the bay, where you’ll find small fish, crabs, and colourful algae. The water clarity is excellent, and the gentle conditions make it a stress-free snorkelling experience. Park your scooter near the beach access and explore the edges of the bay.
Scarrupata: The Volcanic Cliff
The underwater cliff face at Scarrupata on the southeastern coast is dramatic and teeming with life. The dark volcanic rock plunges into deep water close to shore, and the wall is colonised by sponges, coral, and dense schools of fish. Barracuda and amberjack are sometimes spotted in deeper water. The beach itself is remote — ride your scooter to the viewpoint above and descend on foot. The effort ensures you’ll have the underwater world largely to yourself.
Maronti: Thermal Snorkelling
At the eastern end of Maronti beach, near the fumaroles, snorkelling takes on a surreal quality. Warm water rises from the volcanic seabed, and you can actually feel the temperature change as you swim over different areas. The thermal activity creates a unique micro-ecosystem — certain species thrive in the warmer water. The contrast of swimming through alternating warm and cool patches is an experience unique to volcanic islands.
Equipment and Safety Tips
Bring your own quality mask and snorkel for the best experience — cheap rental equipment often leaks. Fin selection matters: short fins are sufficient for calm bays, but longer fins help in areas with current like Punta Caruso. Always snorkel with a partner and stay aware of boat traffic, especially near harbours. Underwater visibility is best in the morning before winds create surface chop. A scooter is ideal for carrying your snorkel gear between multiple spots in a single day — strap your fins to the back and your mask in the storage box. The combination of volcanic underwater scenery and convenient scooter access makes Ischia one of the Mediterranean’s best snorkelling destinations.
