Ischia Street Food: Where to Eat On the Road by Scooter

Eat Like a Local: Ischia’s Best Street Food

One of the great pleasures of touring Ischia by scooter is the freedom to stop whenever hunger strikes. The island has a vibrant street food culture rooted in centuries of tradition — from fried seafood served in paper cones to sweet pastries filled with local ricotta. These quick, delicious bites are perfect for fuelling your scooter adventures without sitting down for a formal meal.

Ischia Porto: The Starting Point

Before setting off on your island tour, grab breakfast at one of the harbour bars. The local specialty is a sfogliatella — a shell-shaped pastry filled with sweet ricotta and candied fruit, best eaten warm from the oven with an espresso. For something savoury, look for bakeries selling pizza a portafoglio (folded pizza) — a Neapolitan tradition that’s perfectly adapted for eating on the go. The bars along the Riva Destra are popular with locals and serve excellent pastries.

Casamicciola: Arancini and Supplì

Riding west, stop in Casamicciola for arancini — deep-fried rice balls stuffed with ragù, mozzarella, or mushrooms. These golden, crispy spheres are the perfect scooter food: handheld, filling, and absolutely delicious. Several small friggitorie (fry shops) along the main street make them fresh throughout the day. Look for the shop with the longest queue — that’s always the best one.

Lacco Ameno: Gelato Stop

No Italian scooter tour is complete without a gelato stop, and Lacco Ameno has some of the island’s best. Look for artisanal gelaterie using local ingredients — the lemon sorbet made with Ischia lemons is intensely fragrant, and the fig flavour (when in season) is unforgettable. Park your scooter by the waterfront, enjoy your gelato while admiring Il Fungo, and continue refreshed.

Forio: Panini and Focaccia

Forio’s centre has several excellent delis and bakeries where you can build the perfect panino with local ingredients. Try prosciutto crudo with mozzarella di bufala and sundried tomatoes on fresh ciabatta. Alternatively, seek out focaccia topped with cherry tomatoes, olives, and local herbs — still warm from the wood-fired oven. The bakeries near Piazza Municipio are particularly good. Grab your food and ride to nearby Citara beach for a seaside picnic.

Sant’Angelo: Frittura di Pesce

The waterfront of Sant’Angelo offers some of the freshest fried seafood on the island. Small cones of frittura di pesce (mixed fried fish) include tiny anchovies, calamari rings, and shrimp, all lightly battered and deep-fried. Eaten hot from the cone while watching fishing boats in the harbour is a quintessential Ischia moment. Park your scooter above the village and walk down — the food alone is worth the descent.

Barano: Rabbit Panino

In the agricultural heartland of Barano, look for small bars and trattorie that serve panini stuffed with coniglio all’ischitana — the island’s famous slow-cooked rabbit. The tender, flavourful meat in a crusty roll is Ischia’s answer to a gourmet sandwich. It’s a unique street food experience that you won’t find anywhere else in Italy. Some places also serve zingara — a rustic bread stuffed with sausage, peppers, and cheese.

Ischia Ponte: Dolci della Tradizione

End your food tour at Ischia Ponte, where traditional pastry shops serve sweets that have been made the same way for generations. The torta caprese (almond and chocolate cake) is moist and rich, while the pastiera (ricotta and wheat cake) is the island’s signature celebration dessert. Buy a few pieces to take back to your accommodation — they travel perfectly in a scooter’s storage compartment.

Tips for Eating on the Road

Always carry a few napkins in your scooter — street food can be messy but always delicious. Most street food vendors are cash-only, so keep small bills handy. The best street food is found by following locals, not tourist signs. Lunchtime (1-3 PM) and early evening (7-8 PM) are when fried foods are freshest. A scooter’s freedom means you can build an entire day around eating your way around the island — arguably the best possible way to experience Ischia.
